France successfully conducts second evaluation test of the ASMPA-R nuclear missile with the Rafale Marine

France has taken another important step in the modernization of its nuclear deterrence capability. The upgraded and renovated medium-range air-to-surface missile (ASMPA-R) successfully completed its second evaluation firing on 13 November 2025, the Directorate General of Armament (DGA) announced.

The test was carried out by the Marine Nationale in cooperation with the DGA, marking a decisive stage in the renewal program of France’s strategic weaponry.

The test occurred during Operation Diomede, in which a Rafale Marine fighter jet executed a representative flight of a nuclear strike mission. Without a military payload, the ASMPA-R missile was launched at the end of the mission, conducted over French territory under realistic opposition conditions, demonstrating the high level of readiness and expertise of the Nuclear Naval Air Force (Fanu).

According to the DGA, the firing took place at the DGA Essais de Missiles test center, responsible for ensuring full operational safety. The complete trajectory of the Rafale Marine/ASMPA-R system and, subsequently, the missile’s autonomous flight were monitored by facilities located in Biscarrosse (Landes), Hourtin (Gironde) and Quimper (Finistère).

The ASMPA modernization program, conducted under the Military Programming Law (LPM 2024-2030), aims to increase the missile’s intrinsic capabilities and ensure the credibility of the airborne nuclear component in the face of evolving enemy defenses. This renewal will guarantee its effectiveness until the arrival of the future 4th-generation air-to-surface nuclear missile, the ASN4G, expected in 2035.
